i have yearned to pick sweetdark up since last year after hearing a never-ending praise by lady dakota warren herself and truly her recommendations never disappoint as i am completely enamoured by the brilliance of savannah brown’s poetry. i have not read warren’s on sun swallowing and yet from the pieces i’ve seen and read, i think it’ll be a great companion to sweetdark as they do compliment each other well. this has been a quick read before bed but i will definitely return for some personal annotations

It has taken me way to long to finish this book. I don’t usually read poetry and being confronted with a body of work made out of fragments is a very different reading experience. That being said I love how Savannah Brown uses words, combining them in a way that makes them demand to be read aloud and create a rhythm complimenting the meaning you find in them. I wish I had brought myself to finish it sooner.

lately i think mainly of my own hollow bones. maybe i’m more feral than i figured, cherry flesh ripe, my instinct the pit. i’ll let this
life spread me out like a sky. remember, even the sun wants us dead. so worried about belonging when we’re all tangled
in the celestial root: chaos wants for no one but i was released, and for a time, survived

I will not pretend all this sank in after reading it once. In fact I think to fully understand each poem is an impossible task unless you are the one and only Savannah Brown. I like the idea that each time I read this something different will jump out at me. This first time these are the poems that spoke to me the most. Next time will probably be different- I hope next time it will be different.

and yes, i can imagine the trill when the whip of wind cracked past their necks, when the promised pain just missed, but i still have a gnawing sort of pity for any other creature who darts toward the first shrouded wonder moving in the dark, who throws its whole self at hunger without fear of breaking teeth
lovely little collection from savannah brown. it’s easy to see her maturity from graffiti to sweetdark. she’s just getting better with time. i particularly loved the use of commas throughout the work, a consistent and charming ebb and flow, bringing all the anxieties, sweetness, fear and love this collection holds together
