I feel like I missed something with this book?

I really like Ryu Murakami and I did quite enjoy this book, but Ken sucked as a main character. He never became self-critical, or realised how selfish he truly is?? He was a big phoney (pretended to be into books, films, etc when he wasn't) who talked about sex farrrr too much. I understand this book is from the point of view of a seventeen year old boy...but is this truly how they think? everything they do is an attempt to get laid? maybe I just don't personally get it idk.

I really liked all the minor characters of this book and the plot itself, I just wish Ken had some further character development!
