The unlucky Ojo has to leave his Munchkin orbit in order to travel the whole country of Oz and gain ingredients for getting his almost-mute Unc Nunkie back to life. He is accompanied by the beautiful vain glass cat with her pink brain and ruby heart, the patchwork girl that received too many features in her creation and meets friends like the woozy that is a square animal who keeps his word. Sweet and small story. No need to stop reading the Oz series just now, I'll be going all the way.

This book marks Baum's return to the world of Oz after trying to quit his fabled story land in an attempt to muse upon new subjects—thankfully, it was an unsuccessful attempt, and he came back with delightful vengeance in this remarkable story.

"The Patchwork Girl of Oz" is one of Baum's longer Oz books, and it is also very plot-driven, somewhat of an exception for him. Luckily, this plot—the quest of the Munchkin boy Ojo to save his Uncle from a magic spell—does not come at the expense of Baum's usual humor and story-telling style. This book is very funny, mostly due to the introduction of the Patchwork girl herself, who, quickly became one of my favorite characters amidst the entire cast of Oz characters. There are other new characters who are just as delightful, and I'm thinking here of the Woozy. I highly recommend this book, not only to fans of Oz, but to lovers of fantasy.

If Bungle has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Bungle has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Bungle has only one fan then that is me. If Bungle has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Bungle, then I am against the world. Justice for Bungle's pink brains 2024

It took me a very ridiculously long time to make it through this story. I might just be burning myself out on Oz stories, but so much of this seemed "too good to be true" even for the magic land of Oz. But onward I will go into story 8 very soon.

Here I am, almost 60, and revisiting Oz, the favorite country of my youth. I must say, these books are as enjoyable to me as ever. And maybe there are things I enjoy even more as an adult. Baum's silly wordplay. The plotting. I love how Ojo never completes his quest, for a reason that should be clear for anyone who knows Oz, once the ingredients he must seek are told to him. But I won't spoil things.

Of course, you meet the madcap Scraps in this book, as well as Ojo, the Woozy, and Bungle the Glass Cat. But there are also star turns from old favorites: the Shaggy Man, Scarecrow, Dorothy, and the Tin Woodman all have major roles to play. The monosyllabic Unc Nunkie is one of my favorite minor characters, too.
