This is the first Niall Williams book I have read, and I look forward to reading others. This novel requires commitment, make no mistake. If you choose to stick it out, you will be rewarded with an amazing experience. Williams has a gift for crafting beautiful sentences that swell into captivating paragraphs that can transport a reader anywhere he wants to take them. This is no action-packed thriller; Williams wants you to spend time with each page, each scene, appreciating the details he spotlights so well. This book is like a warm spring, bubbling up from below the green earth. Jump in and stay awhile, it beckons you.

Beautifully written. Very lyrical writing style that creates such wonderful imagery in the reader's head. While the book was clearly meant to inspire hope I did have this incredible feeling (or worry) that something terrible was just about to happen. The tension he creates is masterful - all the while you are rooting for Stephen and Gabriella to succeed. Magically sweet!

Some lovely writing, but no match for William's newer books. Contrived, unbelievable situations took away from getting drawn into the story.

There are only three great puzzles in the world, the puzzle of love, the puzzle of death, and, between each of these and part of both of them, the puzzle of God. God is the greatest puzzle of all.

What an incredibly tender story told as only Niall Williams can. His gift of writing makes the story of Phillip and Stephen and life "after" - each has their own life and the two are not twined together but for a weekly gathering to play chess in silence. Together, yet very much apart. It is a story full of joy, sorrow, pain, death, and life... so much life.

I highly recommend.
