I loved this when I first read it. I re-read the series about the time the movies came out, and didn't enjoy it as much that time. Tolkien is rather verbose.

This was an absolutely delightful way to experience Tolkien's great trilogy! I've always found the indexes to be a little dry, but Andy Serkis brought them to life and made them more interesting for me.

I truly did not expect to love this series as much as I did, which is stupid because the trilogy is basically my favorite trilogy ever. The world of Middle Earth is so rich and Tolkien created beautifully flawed and well-written characters. This conclusion was so incredibly satisfying and I learned that so much more happened after the ring was destroyed. (Side note: Andy Serkis reading Gollum's final moment of being reunited with the ring by yelling 'preciousssss!!' as he was falling to his death was perfection). The hobbit battle in the shire was brand new to me and Saruman's demise is so much different from the movie. While I enjoyed reading about the hobbits' further adventure of saving the Shire and bringing it back to its former glory, I appreciate that it actually wasn't part of the movie. I don't read much fantasy but I'm glad that I finally read this trilogy. I can see how easily people can get into the genre as there's so much richness that goes into creating new worlds!
