Historical Mystery set in England 1815 in which an earl's daughter looks into an orphanage's matron's death, it's connection to a treasonous plot and questions about her fiance's death.
4/5 stars: This is the second entry in Connally's Lady Petra Inquires series, which is a Historical Mystery that takes place in England 1815 and features a determined earl's daughter who's tasked by Queen Charlotte to look into an orphanage's matron's death and it's connections to a treasonous plot by radicals with ties to the aristocracy and also must deal with new questions about her fiance's death and if her oldest friend and lover was his killer. Showcasing plenty of twists and turns, Connally has deftly crafted a mystery that balances the suspects, clues and red herrings and will leave you pondering the whodunit until the final reveal. Additionally, I like the resolution of the secondary plot-line about Petra's deceased fiance. Connally's writing and character work are excellent and have a modern feminist spin; the characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable. Petra's a determined woman who uses her position in society and highly connected friends and associates to great advantage in her investigations. Plus I love her relationship with Duncan, her half-Scottish beau. The historical research Connally's done is evident and well done without being oppressive to the overall mystery plot. Connally touches on some sensitive topics, so take care and check the CWs. While you could read this as a stand-alone, you'll gain so much more by reading the series from the beginning; so be sure to pick up book one, [b:Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord|65213393|Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord (Lady Petra Inquires, #1)|Celeste Connally|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1673871680l/65213393._SY75_.jpg|100097030].

This one just didn't quite hit right for me. The author did a great job at bringing me into the setting of London in the early 1800's, but I found the overall plot to be long and drawn out. I also felt like there were just too many characters to keep track of and there wasn't enough mystery solving. I listened to the audio and thought the narrator was fantastic and did a great job adding to the historical vibes of the book.

If you like a good historical romance mystery, this one is for you! A little spicy, but not much, and very full of wit.
The plot was very fun to follow, and I loved every single character. The antagonist and their crew were a little underdeveloped, but also you could extrapolate some from current events and fill in those blanks.
This book is great for anyone who like Tirzah Price or CJ Archer.
Thank you for the ARC!

Lady Petra is back for another fun mystery with a dash of political adventure.
I absolutely adored Celeste Connallyโs first novel featuring Petra Forsyth, a sharp headstrong curious woman defying social norms of the Regency period. In this tale, Petra finally gets answers for the mysterious death of her fiancรฉ, while investigating a plot to take down the Queen. I loved how the action picks up directly after the first book, with no time jump, which helped with remembering what happened previously, but that Connally doesnโt give answers right away. Petra (and the reader) must work for them, figuring out where othersโ alliances lie. So many of the characters that I loved previously are back, and I enjoyed that we not only got to spend more time with them, but also got to know them better. Petraโs best friend Caroline continues to be hilarious, alongside Lottie, Teddy and romantic partner Duncan, who are there for Petra, with no questions asked. Petraโs willingness to open herself up to her friends for help was a joy to see, especially when they teamed up to solve the multiple mysteries of the story. The plot does get a little convoluted, but it does wrap up satisfyingly.
Allโs Fair In Love and Treachery is a great addition to this Regency-set romantic mystery series. I await for the next adventure for Lady Petra and her friends! Thank you to Minotaur and NetGalley for the ARC!

Thank you Netgalley, Celeste Connally and MacMillan Audio.
Typically I find it an absolute breeze to provide feedback on books from the# MacAudio2024 program because they're all so beautifully done. This one is a struggle for me though because while the production and narration was actually wonderful. The book itself though, while compared to a cross between the Bridgertons and an Agatha Christie... fell short for me. I didn't find any of the characters particularly likeable or compelling and the story really didn't hold my interest. This one wasn't a winner for me. I'd say 2.5 stars.
