I love an unhinged female character. Joan goes back and forth telling us the story of her trauma surrounding the death of her parents while recounting more current traumas from her adult life, and more unfold as the story is told.

I loved this book! It’s dark, off-putting, and absolutely amazing. It captures so much of the experience of what it truly is to be a woman.

Really great book. Very intense and tragic, with a twisted hopefulness to it. Joan’s voice is so interesting and rich, I really did feel the story was revealed at a great pace and felt the climax of the past and the present coincided beautifully.

The actions in the book are incredibly visceral and at times can feel almost depraved, but they felt executed in an almost tender way. The characters are all complex and also very real.

This book was..... a lot. That is probably the best way to describe it, a lot. I had a hard time getting into it I am not going to lie, but about a third of the way through I could not put it down!

The main character just didn’t feel like a human being. I absolutely recognise that she had experienced a lot of trauma in life, but she thought of nothing but sex and her awful past the entire time. I’m sure her trauma was pretty all-consuming but I wish we heard about her watching tv or listening to music or having any hobby that isn’t seducing and subsequently fucking men (not slut shaming. Like slay but also go read a book). Also whilst I love a dysfunctional female protagonist/narrator, can she not say “I am depraved. I hope you like me”??? That was so embarrassing for her. So in summation, her character fell flat for me because she didn’t have any interests (except being depraved and wanting to become a single mother…)
