A very tender and beautiful read, so much compassion has been poured into this as it covers a lot of grief and pain - however, none of the writing is sadness for the sake of it or ~trauma porn~

A recommended read :)

An absolute triumph from start to finish, Mother Mother tells the story of Mary McConnel: a young woman growing up on the fringes of Belfast, Northern Ireland, during the very peak of IRA conflicts. It beautifully captures all of the awkwardness and speedbumps of a bilungrosman, as well as delicately referencing the impacts of living in a world brimming with religious, national and class tension. What it expertly does, however, is refuse to allow these events to control the narrative. The plot is very much focussed upon the lives of Mary and TJ. Technically speaking, the novel is wonderfully researched and structured, and Annie moves between perspectives and past and present tense with absolute ease and skill. The character construction was also incredibly well rounded and sensitive; highlighting all of the flaws and intricacies that the natural human self has to offer. I couldn't put this novel down, and am very excited to see what Annie does next.
