I've put 5 stars but feel it is more a 4.5, only because I wanted the ending to have a bit more to it.

Will definitely pick up the next in the duology

I still enjoyed this the second time around, I love Kamzin as a main character, she aspires to be a great explorer so when the opportunity arises to aid the current royal explorer Kamzin jumps at the chance. Her sister is definitely not my favourite character, she never listens to her sister or considers what she wants, but what sister ever does, as the youngest sister of 4 I found I really related to Kamzin where her sister was involved. I enjoyed the adventure and the danger that was always lurking and that ending wow, even though I knew it was coming I was still shocked.

There is something interesting here, but there was a lot that to be honest just left me annoyed. Cue:
-love triangle
-attractive best friend that we are NOT interested in
-main character that everyone says is "special"
-young MC with skills no one else has

I can take some of these but so many of them together is hard to take. The main character felt naive and I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters.

The most interesting part was the witches/magic/world-building. I think the book would actually be much more interesting if
it was from River's perspective--infiltrating the court, finding out where the bones are, etc.
But I guess that wouldn't leave room for the "big twist."

My heart is utterly broken.

I can see why some readers struggled with this book. The pacing is definitely not for everyone, but other than an impatience at the beginning to meet River Shara, I had no qualms with the pacing, characters, or events. It’s definitely a slower pace than most YA fantasy books of today, but if you can read older fantasy like Lord of the Rings, you’ll have no issue with the pacing of this book.

This book was beautifully written. It was rich with culture and setting. I loved the story, I loved the Tibetan culture and landscape. This book was a magical fantasy story that has me immediately grabbing the second book, not only to see how the story ends but for more of everything.

*I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review*
This book was absolutely amazing. I know there were alot of people who felt like it was slow, and I guess it was, but I really really enjoyed it. Kamzin is an incredible badass. She is an elite climber, who can never show it because her family wishes for her to have a safe and normal life. Kamzin’s mother was an elite mountain climber, and was constantly taking risks. Kamzin’s father and sister want nothing more than to see her be safe and not to take the risks that her mother did. But ulitmately it ends up happening, as it should.

This story was beautiful in a way that I’m having a hard time describing. It’s set in a Nepalese type area, and Raksha is clearly a stand in for Everest. But the way the story is built is beautiful. There is wonderful imagery and backstory that is fed to the reader in little snippets. I admit that this could be frustrated but I wsa so caught up in the journey that Kamzin is on that while I wanted to know, I appreciated the ‘now’ of the story.

The tension between River and Kamzin was off the charts, and I appreciated the slow burn. I felt like I followed Kamzin’s denial in what River is hiding because I wanted him so badly to be the good person that kept peeking through. I really really enjoyed this book, and while I’m left wanting because it’s clearly part of a series, the ending wasn’t such a cliffhanger that I was upset or angry. I just really want the next book now. 5 out of 5 stars.

The plot was really interesting but it dealt heavily with elements I’m not a fan of so I realized I should put it down. 😞
