Flache und unsympathische Charaktere, aufgeblähte Kapitel, nicht nachvollziehbare Storyentwicklungen, offene Fragen.
Boyne hätte besser eine Kurzgeschichte daraus machen sollen.

This isn’t what I was expecting but I think it’s all the better for it.
When I first looked into getting this book, I thought it would be a scary story with frightening imagery. This was underscored by the fact I found it in the “horror” section of the bookshop. Thankfully, it wasn’t at all like that.
It’s what I would deem a gothic tale with slightly spooky overtones. It was a perfect story for Spooktober. There were a few spooky images but nothing overly violent or gory. It was relying on more subtlety than explicit shock value and I thought the subtlety of the story was part of its charm.

An extremely refreshing and intoxicating Dickensian-era read. The author's language is immaculate in keeping with the times and the story will have you engaged from start to finish. A serious recommendation to anyone interested in gothic literature, the era or just good literature.

Interesting take on a ghost story. I found it easy to read and fairly captivating.

This book is a perfect book to read during the fall. When everything is getting more dark outside and everything has more mystery than in the rest of the year.
If you like spooky stories, you should definitely read this one! The writing is so exquisite, you become Eliza Caine and live her emotions and actions she goes through.
It has cliff hangers that puts you on the top of your chair, and it reads like cherry pie!
Have fun and creeps with this one!
