Not what I expected.
This book was far better than I expected. I thought it would be a cheesy, but entertaining, ghost story. It was definitely not cheesy. It was entertaining and a quick read. At times I found Eliza rather annoying. I would have liked to have read more about Isabella. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I hadn't read any John Boyne before, since I'm basically avoiding The Boy in the Striped Pajamas for fear of bawling my eyes out. This is different fare - a pretty standard Victorian ghost story. I think anyone into this type of book or movie will see everything coming, but it does create a sort of deliciously creepy atmosphere, and if you like that... well, it's worth a read.

This was a great ghost story, it was mysterious and the pace didn't let up.
From the first sentence mentioning Charles Dickens I was hooked. This really was everything I wanted in an October read.

It was fine. The writing is extremely obvious and the plot is easy to predict, but it was fine.
