I dropped off reading Narnia past The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, so it's fascinating to read them now. While the story is pretty engaging and I'm a big fan of Bree, the vain talking horse, the Orientalism is overpowering here. I can see why it's often skipped over in adaptations.

Well this series suddenly got really racist. Even putting that aside, it just doesn't have to magic of the other books.

This is the story told to Eustace and Jill in "The Silver Chair." It takes place when Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter rule Narnia. Further south there are lands that are not Narnia, and in this book we learn of the other lands like Archenland. The main character is a slave boy in the south who runs away and wants to go to Narnia. These are his adventures along the way.

i cannot by rights give this a 5 because of the rampant racist orientalism in this book (brown people = savages, every single stereotype about middle eastern people twisted to be as bad as possible except one who is Not Like Other Girls). however. this has always been my favorite Narnia book for the way that it gives us a glimpse into the lands surrounding Narnia, and takes us away from the Pevensies as main characters but still keeps us grounded within their reign. anyway. i loved this book as a kid. some parts are hard to swallow now but shasta and aravis are some of my favorite ever narnia characters.
