Kay Brelland masters dialogue beautifully and she has introduced us to some believable, well-rounded characters. But poor Rosie has four problems: World War II rages, she is a an unmarried mother, she is surrounded by criminals and she puts her own life at risk by becoming an ambulance driver. There were quite a few characters in this novel and some of them had more than one name so it did get a little confusing. There were some long sections of exposition which rather slowed the pace.
