I have really mixed feelings about this book. It’s hailed as THE BOOK to read about ADHD, but there were many instances where I found the tone about people with ADHD extremely judgmental and condescending. This became more irritating to me as I hunted down the author’s credentials and she has no degree in counseling or psychology. A bachelor’s degree is Mass Comm is insufficient. While some vignettes were helpful, others were confusing and messy. It’s almost as if this book posits selfishness and narcissism as ADHD traits and that is flat out wrong. Honestly, I think this book just muddied the waters for me

Really good, informative read about adult ADHD. Definitely worth the read if you or someone you know is trying to figure ADHD out. However, it is centered on relationships and communication so not necessarily about daily management.

I read this book at the request of my husband, who was diagnosed before we met with adult ADHD but does not receive treatment for it.\n\nIt was both a frustrating and educational read. \n\nIt was educating in that it clearly identified several issues in our lives and family as far as forgetting, lack of follow through and consistency, hyperfocus alternating with no focus, etc. To know that its not just me being a stickler or going crazy but theres an actual diagnosis causing it to be. \n\nThe frustration comes into play in that theres not a lot to do about it except go on medication which he has tried and the side-effects apparently outweighed the benefits.\n\nStill, Im hoping that my increased knowledge on the topic will at least help me understand him a bit better and be more patient while still upholding the boundaries I need for me.\n

I bought this book for my husband on my therapists recommendation and after he read it I think it really helped him understand the challenges I face with my ADHD. He asked me to read it too and I was blown away by how many of my behavioral patterns were actually linked to ADHD. It's given us a good foundation to discuss my neurodivergence in a healthy way.
This book doesn't land 100% for me but it's not meant to. ADHD manifests in different ways for different people. As such I was able to skip some chapters. But as a whole I found it useful in prompting reflection for both of us. Sometimes it was painful to see the things he highlighted or recognize myself in a behavioral antipattern, but ultimately it allows me to be mindful of how it manifests in the future. I definitely recommend this book for couples where one individual has ADHD.

This is an incredible book. I would highly suggest it for anyone who lives/works with, or knows someone who has ADHD. It has been an enlightening read for me and taught me valuable lessons about communicating with others, and how perceptions of situations can differ based on individual brain function.
