The blurb on the cover called this "A love story for our times." I don't think that kind of lead in could be more misleading. I'm mad the cover is so beautiful since the book was deeply mid for me.

This might be my new favorite book. I’m going to do my best to organize my thoughts about it, but it’s hard to put into words how beautiful it was.
The story jumped time and place frequently in a way that might be off putting to some readers, but I thought the author pulled it off well and the time jumps give the reader just enough information to explain why the characters are doing what they’re doing in the present moment of the story. Emilie and Sara’s love story is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever read; even when they make mistakes with each other their love still feels pure. Emilie’s character development hit close to home for me, which is probably why I love this book so much. There’s a lot I could say about how much I liked the ending, too, but I don’t want to spoil it. If you’ve ever felt lonely, misunderstood, or unlovable, read this book and let it heal you a little.

“So this was how it felt—to be dealt a blow, to pause, to keep going in spite of it. Not to start over but to continue.”

Literary fiction meets romance in this stunning novel. Side-by-side storylines carry two leading ladies through traumatic young adult experiences and into their own story together. It was beautiful.

The symbolism of Yerba buena is a bit redundant, but the fluid story telling and depth of characters makes up for it.

If this book were a cocktail, it would be bittersweet and gentle, something soothing and unfamiliar all at once. I really loved the vibes of this book, it was tender and kind of slow, letting the characters unfurl into each other naturally. I wished there was slightly more depth to our main characters, I felt like their trauma was dumped on me in the first few chapters and then they existed to push through it later without much more to them. But the romance was subtle, sweet, and really complimented the larger story the book was telling. I thought this was a very nice read that balanced so many different themes well.

Firstly, I'm obsessed with this cover, and now that I know what the cover means, I love it even more.

Secondly, I don't want to go through a spiel about what this is about, because I don't think I can do that adequately without giving it all away. The only thing you need to know going in is that it's a story of two women and the story intersects. The rest is beautiful. Of course, I advise you to check the triggers online, but as for looking into the actual journey of the characters, I'd advise against it. I think going into it blind made me love it even more.

The writing was beautiful, but it wasn't flowery or too much. I thought the main characters were both hot messes with a ton of red flags between the two of them, but I love reading about women with red flags. I would say, actually, it's one of my favorite things. Another thing I really loved about it was how much Lacour put her own Creole heritage into the pages. It made the book just that much more personal. I thought the stories of the two women were layered seamlessly and although the chapters are long, I *flew* through this in a way I haven't flown through a book in awhile.
