I knew this dealt with heavier subject matters but wasn't prepared for the level of trauma, loss, and grief just in the first few pages. Maybe I'll revisit when I can handle those subjects because it's beautifully written and has some promising characters.

There were parts of this book I did not enjoy, not because they weren’t well written but because they were not easy. This is a bittersweet book that will tear at your heartstrings, but it’s a beautifully woven story down to the smallest details.

This book is well written, but overall aggressively fine. For me, the book was too stuck in tropes of romance, coming of age, drama, etc until the last 100 pages. I just kept reading and wondering what made this special. I did not think Emilie’s Creole identity was effectively communicated, which makes sense for the character arc, but does not challenge readers to understand Creole people and their history and perception in the US. I was also disappointed that Sara’s character was a dumping ground for trauma when their story could have been the same without the melodrama. Once again, the fact that is was well written made it all fine. I wanted it to commit more to every different theme that was brought up. Less sad gay fiction!
