Always love Grenville's writing and wit. Sense of place is acute and character strong. Felt the end was rushed though.

3.5 stars. I loved the perspective. I loved the respect for the First Nations people of Australia and a realistic view of what could have taken place.

Great concept for a book - such a fascinating idea to take snapshots of a life and expand them into a complete novel. Also loved the development of the narrative voice; it was wonderful to see how the changes in Mrs. Elizabeth were echoed in how she described the world around her.

Beautifully written, and an interesting story. Based on the life of Elizabeth Macarthur, the story suggests that she, in fact, was the principal behind the sheep and wool business. In her own way, she was as cunning and conniving as he was, as I suppose most women had to be, particularly if they were living with a bombastic bully. An interesting blend of history and fiction.

I loved this reimagining of the life of Elizabeth Macarthur. It was by turns, amusing, poignant, incredibly sad and downright enraging - especially when dealing with the plight of first nations people and the status of women in the 18th century.
But above all, this is a beautiful, evocative piece of writing. Very highly recommended.

This is a work of fiction, but it brought Elizabeth Macarthur to life for me and opened up another perspective on John Macarthur. It is an interesting read as you also get a glimpse into the past, with the author’s use of her research to weave real places, people and events into the story.
