Read with my 6yo girl child
This was fun :)

delightful!

I got this book sort of by accident. Due to some late shipping on a giant book order of signed and book-plated Maggie books, Fountain Bookstore threw this in as an apology (which was totally unnecessary because they're Super Great, but also: this is the best kind of apology I could ever hope for). I hadn't been counting on reading the kidlit in my Goal To Read Everything Maggie Stiefvater Ever Wrote And Thus Prove That Gansey Would Survive TRK but I started flipping through it and I got instantly hooked.

This book was so much of the best parts of the Animal-Lover Girl Takes Care of Cute Animals genre of books that I devoured between like, ages 8-14. The closest analogue I've got to it is probably Avalon, Web of Magic, except that Pip Bartlett (while equally dealing with magical creatures) has more of the eco-friendly "we have to save the species!" plot going on (and less "we have to save the world!") Plus she can talk to the animals, so. Infinite bonus there.

The drawings are so cute!! And Pip's annotations on her field guide to magical creatures are all gems. I am an especial fan of the gentle mockery of unicorns.

Throw this book at the nearest 9-year-old weird animal kid, they'll totally dig it.

on a mission to read all maggie stiefvater books and this was just an easy quick one, but i still enjoyed it as a children’s book

Cute book to do as a read aloud with a 9-year-old.

What a fun book. I loved the magical beasts. I enjoyed the story. I want more Pip Bartlett and Tomas! I can't wait to start recommending this book.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars!

This was a cute book that will be easy to recommend to both animal and fantasy lovers. I particularly liked the descriptions of each of the magical creatures throughout the book.

A cute little book about magical creatures, a book that describes them, and a girl who can talk to them. This would be a great book to read aloud to my kids if they were in elementary school again.

Such a fun read! A few characters were pretty annoying but I enjoyed the main characters and the imaginative magical creatures, as well as the absurd plot.

A fun adventure with a plucky heroine, scared sidekick, and their host of magical creature run-ins. Imagine arrogant unicorns, furballs that spontaneously burst into fire, scary grims, mean ducks and something called a hobgrackle and you have just scratched the surface of the imaginative creatures that appear throughout the story. Poor Pip has been banished to Cloverton after a fiasco at school involving show unicorns. She befriends Tomas, a boy who has allergies to his allergies and together they work to find out why Fuzzles are suddenly invading everyone's underwear drawers. Humourous, fun story with easy to like characters makes this is an easy one for middle graders to love.
