I adored this charming novel about a young girl who returns to the island of her birth and seeks to connect with her brother who went missing as an infant. Part folklore fairytale, lovely writing and scene setting. My daughter kept asking for just one more chapter of this slim tale!

I read this as a girl and loved the simplicity of the story and the main character's name - Fiona.

This was an early start for the Literary Life Reading Challenge. This is the story The Secret of Roan Inish is based upon. It was a delightful little book, and the movie followed it closely, except for moving the location from Scotland (the book) to Ireland (the movie) and changing some of the names to reflect that. I think I still might love the movie more though *gasp* just for the atmospheric delight of watching it.

Would make a great cozy read aloud for ages 6-8. The movie version, Secret of Roan Irish, is fairly true to the book. Charming and old timey with a relatable feral brother thrown in.

My dad took me to see The Secret of Roan Inish at the movies as a child and I was completely enchanted, I also grew up next to the sea and I loved seeing the wild children and wild scenery. I became fascinated by selkies and British folklore and looked for more books and films that were similar. What I didn't know at the time is that 90's film is based on this 50's book which would have been out of print. I wish I could have read this when I was small it has so many elements of books I liked then, it even has sweet passages about setting up abandoned cottages so they can be lived in again. This would be a great book to read aloud to a 5-10 year old that loves the sea and a quiet life.
