The writing is undoubtedly fantastic, but I just found the first few pages a bit slow. Loved the description of when the story teller loses his fear at the prospect of dying in one of God's most incredible feats.

The choice to make the short story a flashback undermines some of the tension. Still a solid adventuring tale, but is lacking in the gothic horror that Poe champions.

I read this because it was mentioned in a book about Marshall McLuhan. The story itself is a little dragged out, but the application is very interesting: the maelstrom is media and we can only survive it through understanding it and riding it out.
