This surprised me. I picked this up because one of my friends is a fan of the artist, and I don't know what I was expecting it to be about but the cover was giving romance, maybe erotic fiction vibes. That's not what this is.

This is a story about a dystopian society where same-sex couples and mixed race pairings are heavily frowned upon. Where single people who are not in active pursuit of the 'ideal' nuclear family are penalised. Where every young adult is on a ticking clock to have children and set a good example by dating other 'stable' individuals of the same race but opposite gender. And where marriages fall apart in silence as a result of couples trying to hide their differences, and children grow up in homes where nobody is happy but everyone pretends to be.

I was hesitant going in about the characters being animals (I'm not going to say the B word, because I don't want it in association with this review, but I'm sure it's a fairly obvious concern to have). But really they are just people. Leslie is a pig girl, yes, but she rents an apartment, she eats sushi, she has a pet lizard, and she works a dead-end job. The use of animal morphology here (so far) has only been to tell a story about how superficial and damaging segregation laws are.

There is a possible romance plot forming in this volume, but I think this story is better categorised as suspense. It's bleak. There's gun violence, scenes of people being trailed for being romantically attached to someone from the 'wrong' race, homophobia, blackmail, depression, bullying, harassment. None of it is graphic but please be aware of this going in.

I found some of the panels difficult to read, the text bubbles don't flow as well as they could but I believe this is a translation so that could be why. The world building was very interesting and I wish we had got more of that and a little less of Leslie's personal story, which took a turn for the dramatic a bit too early (for my tastes). I prefer a slower burn. I think the villain could have been more sinister if he had been allowed to act out his fake persona for significantly longer than he did.

Text is translated from Italian and the dialogue as well as internal thoughts of the characters are not that strong. They're a little too explanatory of what's going on in the scene around them, so it doesn't feel like "real" internal thoughts. The art is fantastic and the mystery of what's going on between the MC and her dream lover is intriguing. I also love the Handmaid-esque, dystopian world - dark, scary, and too familiar.

How has it taken me over a month to review this title?!
Seriously, I loved it. I read both volumes in one sitting and have checked maybe 2 or 3 times on when the third one will potentially be released in English. I. Need. More.
I went into this one thinking it would be insta-love between an aggressive werewolf and a more submissive pig -- I WAS WRONG.

Wow, this isn't just a romance, in fact there is barely any romance or sexy times outside her dreams. Although, that being said, the sex dreams can be pretty explicit - so heads up!
This series is about a super controlling government that is involved with their public's love lives. No gay marriages, no inter-species *cough* interracial *cough* relationships and lots we must keep our species going rhetoric. This wasn't the story I signed up for, but I'm 100% here for it.

It is deadly (seriously, my heart broke over one death), there is rebellion, and a mythical past. I'm in LOVE with this series even though there were some confusing moments.

Beautiful but a bit too complicated for me. And I wouldn't label this as romance.

Vol 1: ★★★★✫
It was a great start, the art was beautiful. The real world allegories were obvious and well done.
Vol 2: ★★★★
Still very good, but a little less gripping. The mystery also started becoming strange.
Vol 3: ★★★
Everything was resolved very quickly and strangely, so I didn't like it as much as the first two, but it was still good.
