somewhat of a soap opera and the ending was a disappointment, but an intriguing story that i mostly enjoyed reading.

I’m more than a little late reading this international bestseller. I honestly didn’t know what to expect other than the story centered around a creepy dollhouse in 16th century Amsterdam. Really? Does there need to be anything else? Burton’s writing keeps the pages turning, while the book was much less of a thriller and way more melodramatic than I usually go for, I loved it. It’s a season of Dynasty mixed with Needful Things set in 16th century Amsterdam. I picked it up during a very snowy week and the hours flew by.

I picked this after hearing part of a Radio 4 programme about it. Frankly, I thought it was drivel. I had the impression this was a book by someone who decided they wanted to be a novelist rather than someone who was a writer.

The style was just amateurish: unnecessary and unconvincing imagery; cliffhanger chapter endings; illogical in parts; mediocre characterisation and the ending left me feeling like I’d just read a glorified shaggy dog story.

After this I have started reading Milkman by Anna Burns The difference between them is like that an author who is a master of style and someone who writes as if they had done a correspondence course in creative writing.

However, I do understand that I am in a minority in my low opinion of the book.

This was an interesting book. I guess it was okay. I didn’t particularly like or hate any of the characters or experimented any sort of feeling towards them, the story was okay and there were parts were I didn’t want to put the book down. I think there’s still room for me to like it more tho, so for now I guess I’ll just say it was good.
