Pretty much typical lost treasure standard fare, nothing much to write about. Characters were bland, repeatedly getting into trouble and making last minute escapes which seemed far fetched even for a Clive Cussler book.
I don't think i have liked any Clive Cussler book since he started co-authoring except maybe Treasure Of Khan.

Gave me Natuonal treasure puzzle solving vibes. Starts by finding a nazi submarine in a river, ends with finding Persian loot, and fancy french wine.

Fast paced, formulaic, but fun. Still trying to figure out how they raised that sunken sub...
If you, like me, love a good adventure movie then this book is for you. A globe spanning adventure that has fun with history and it's characters. The leads Sam and Remi Fargo are funny, sweet, thoughtful and ready for pretty much anything. The villains are formidable and an ever looming threat.
One of the reasons I loved this book was the relationship between Sam and Remi, they are introduced in a way that is so refreshing in these kinds of novels. One of Sam's first actions in the book is to tell his wife, covered in mud, out in the swamp, how beautiful and wonderful she is. And he means it.
It's really refreshing to have a set of hero's that both love each other AND get along.
Their trust in each other carried both themselves and me through this quickly paced globe trotting adventure. Looking forward to their next adventure!

I've read Clive Cussler in the past. And although I remember little to nothing about that novel (The Wrecker) what I do remember is that it was a fun beach/summer read. When Spartan Gold was chosen for our book club (GamersRead) I was excited for a fun read as the weather turns from winter to spring.
What transpired though was a run of the mill adventure book that had almost no character development and only the most minimal amount of intrigue. The book centers around the husband and wife duo of Sam and Remi Fargo. A pair of explorers who stumble across a wine bottle from Napolean's personal stash. This discovery sends them on a global trip to find the rest of the bottles. Unfortunately for them, they're not the only ones on the case. There's also a rich Russian mob guy who wants them as well.
There's one thing I despised about Spartan Gold that turned me off from the book. How did this duo become so filthy rich? And how did they become 007 level action heroes? It can't just be a couple judo classes. The duo get themselves in some very precarious situations and somehow are never phased by it in the slightest. If I had guns firing me and the Italian mob wanted to take me out, I think I'd say forget the rest of the wine bottles but not these two.
And really that's Spartan Gold in a nutshell. A whirlwind adventure that makes no sense and has no real stakes. Nothing was ever going to happen in what we know is a very long series. And if you're ok with turning your brain off then you might enjoy Spartan Gold more then I do.

A bit of a romp without a lot of suspense. Everything comes pretty easy to the protagonists, without much in the way of unexpected twists or challenges. Still, I like Remi and Sam, so I like the book.
My first Clive Cussler book. I appreciated the adventure the characters took and the writing style, but felt like the protagonists figured out the clues or got out of sticky situations too easily. I could definitely see myself giving Cussler another try, but probably from a different series.
