Good book with horrible faults.

Sons of Horus in the bunker are written like inexperienced fools.

Custodes falling for a silly improvised argument - meh. Custodes falling to Chaos - awesome!

Weird word choices? What the f was he thinking? He needs to re-edit this book. Oh wait, it’s meant to be ENUNCIA. Like a sneaky inside meta riddle clue.

Short chapters? Kinda ok, I guess, given the immense subject matter.

But Malcador and Sanguinius and a few other parts - top notch.

For how slow the final trilogy is, it’s very good.

It only feels appropriate for Abnett to write the final book in the Horus Heresy, and there’s an awful lot to enjoy here, but it’s hard to make a final judgement on the series finale when this whole book – all 660 pages of it in hardback – only gets us part of the way there. Black Library hasn’t yet revealed how many more volumes there will be, and even having read the first one it’s tricky to call whether there’s going to be one or two more to come. Based on this I’m pretty confident that Abnett’s going to stick the landing, but I really wish BL would get on with it and at least let us know when volume 2 is due out! Until they do, I’ve got a lot to think about in terms of what’s happened so far – I don’t feel like there have been any major surprises, but it’s all been compelling stuff and I’ve a feeling there might be some surprises still to come.

The endgame for Terra and the Loyalist Primarchs is here with the Angel and the Praetorian stepping up to take the final fight to Lupercal with their all powerful father.

A fitting beginning of the end that still manages to introduce a few twists into an all too familiar tale and ending for Warhammer 40k fans. I can't wait until the other two.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say Abnett is the best Warhammer novel writer of the bunch. Others are still good to pretty-good, but he's a step above them!

I’ll be honest, I expected a 600 page part 1 of 3 to be a bit of a slog to read but this was captivating. The story of the end of the siege of terra is told at such a fast and frantic pace it really does convey the feeling of utter chaos (In both the usual sense and the very Warhammery sense). Still 2 books to go but so far so good on the ending of this series.
