Actually really enjoyed the stories, just struggled to latch on to reading them all at once. And then forgot some background info when I didn’t. But great content

It was okay. Honestly given that they’re supposed to poke fun a bit at Sherlock Holmes I sort of expected them to be better? I’m guessing they do get better but unlike where Sherlock has to unravel a different type of case every time with a different criminal, Lupin is ALWAYS the criminal and therefore the book gets SUPER same-y very fast.

Sherlock Holmes popularized the detective protagonist genre. Aresene Lupin popularized the gentleman thief genre.

The difference between these two icons tells you a lot about the difference between Victorian England and the Third French Republic.

Anyhow, there stories mostly depend on Lupin using misdirection, mistaken identity, and complicated schemes for Lupin to get the goods AND achieve some sense of justice.

The stories in this collection get a tad repetitive, but the final meeting between Holmes and Lupin is pretty satisfying (although there’s more than a bit of intellectual property infringement.)

Worth reading, but I’m not sure I’m ready for all the other collections.

Very fun collection of stories! I was engaged by them all. The stories are clever enough, and Lupin is an engaging character.
