I liked this book, a lot, because of its historical intrigue and societal injustices; the general air of mystery drew me in from the first page, and I couldn't put it down. I did, however, expect more of a magical element, which by the end of the book felt was lacking. It is certainly worth the read--full of drama and complex relationships--but it's not for the faint of heart. Difficult topics are discussed through the point of view character's experience and there were sections hard to stomach (for their varying levels of sadness and anxiety). It's a great option for those who like historical fiction, and I'm curious how the next book follows, what fresh pieces of the mysteries they'll unveil.

Moments where it feels like an excellent novel and moments where it feels like ao3

I wanted to give this 4 stars, I really did, and halfway through I think I would have. But then it just dragged on a little too long and the ending left me feeling like maybe I didn't even get it. The descriptions are beautiful and the writing is very good. The suspense builds but then I think it sort of fizzles out. Still, worth a read, particularly for those who like historical fiction.

I found this book utterly infuriating. The opening and premise of this book were promising, but it failed to deliver on that promise. The author kept adding different threads and layers to the story, but failed to finish or connect them to one another. And the book didn't end so much as it just stopped.

This one is probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I'm still trying to process whether I liked the book and if I'd recommend it to others. It reads very easily, I got through most of it in one afternoon. I think I expected more from the blurb on the book flap. Though the novel is titled The Miniaturist, I felt that the miniaturist and their contributions to Nella's dollhouse were not as integrated as I thought they would be.

After receiving a miniature version of her new home from her husband, Nella hires a miniaturist to furnish the dollhouse. Despite never meeting the miniaturist, they have an uncanny ability to make exact replications of the items, animals, and even people in Nella's home. When Nella starts to notice the similarities between real life events with the items the miniaturist has provided, she begins to wonder if the miniaturist is a prophet or a witch.

I really thought that the miniaturist would have more of a front seat role in this book, but found them to be very secondary. The events of the book are fascinating, and may have even been more fascinating had there been no miniaturist at all. I kept waiting for answers and found myself wanting more at the end of the book. I do like ambiguous endings to an extent, but there were a lot of loose story lines that left too much to the imagination for my preference.

This was such a surprise. Not what I expected at all but I truly enjoyed it.

I think this is a great novel, but somehow I didn't get truly involved with it. I was not completely absorbed.
