This is the story of Laura and Shirley and how one sister can completely dictate the destiny of the other. Very good character development, there's nothing jaw dropping about the story, it felt plausible and it could really have happened to someone. I like the slow pace of the story; that's the thing about this book, it's not over dramatic, but it's very affecting.

For the first time, she felt and comprehended the weight of love...
The first two-thirds of the book was promising; there is the sense that the author very much understands people. The last third was a bit of a bewildering philosophical ramble that left me vaguely disappointed and confused.
A disappointment. I loved [b:Absent in the Spring|1809478|Absent in the Spring|Mary Westmacott|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1449944358l/1809478._SX50_.jpg|1507078], [b:Unfinished Portrait|2282578|Unfinished Portrait|Mary Westmacott|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1436370193l/2282578._SY75_.jpg|144018], and [b:A Daughter's a Daughter|2975046|A Daughter's a Daughter|Mary Westmacott|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1345264601l/2975046._SY75_.jpg|3005410]. I recommend you spend your time reading those books rather than this one.
Oh! this book was dull. It starts ok showing us Laura’s childhood, then it picks up showing the lives and interactions between the sisters but, unfortunately, ends with some random guy, with whom I never connected, stepping into scene who somehow gets to know both sisters and then something happens here and there and the story ends. Blah....

I actually really liked the book until the middle of it. Then I think the story gets lost a little and everything gets a little weird. It wasn't terrible but it was just not great.

This book had me puzzled quite a bit all the way through. The genre classifications listed by Goodreads were "mystery, romance". While there was a TEENSY bit of romance, I would not call this a romance nor would I call this a mystery. I was telling my husband about this book and he said maybe it's a mystery as to why there's no romance. LOL Then I read some other reviews after I completed this and some said it is a "psychological drama". THAT I can definitely agree with.
I think I would have DNF'd this if I were not determined to find out IF there was a mystery involved (spoiler: There's not.) I did become semi-attached to the characters and wanted to see how it all played out especially after such a terrible tragedy in the beginning of the story.
How much love is too much love....and what lengths will a person go to for those they love? Many times we see "The Burden" that several characters carried or "had" to carry and how that eventually effected their lives and how they lived them.
Going by Goodreads ratings, I'm going to go with "It was okay, 2 stars". I will be reading another of Mary Westmacott's books just to see if there are any better than this (I read that they are).

Not quite as good as her mysteries but still an entertaining story.
I usually dont read popular classical authors and my expectations were low, but i surprisingly liked this book. It showed characters feeling quite unusual emotions, they were tasty. Thank you to Polina for gifting me this book.
