Fascinating little summary of a wild period. Though this is very short (that's partly the point) it provides an interesting look at not just the events, but wider implications of political motivations and consequences at all levels (including some interesting ruminations on the role of monarchy and the grasping hands of the barons that are particularly pertinent to subsequent English history). Though honestly, the most interesting personage in this whole little tale is Matilda of Boulogne, and finding more detail about her seems unlikely outside of deep academia.

An excellent concise exposition of Stephen’s rule.  He may have been a pleasant, personable man, but he made an ineffective king and this is laid out clearly.  Empress Matilda is also given a fair treatment in her side of this story which was good to see.  Enjoyable and informative.

Eh, not a huge fan of this one. I don't like Stephen already. To me, he wasn't the correct ruler but he was the one who ended up crowned. But, even in this biography, it felt like Stephen was a footnote and the focus was on Henry II rather than Stephen himself.
