Fascinating basis for story but incredibly repetitive narrative. Worth reading in spite of that however. I did start second in series because of interesting setting and characters. Narrative voice of heroine when she is young is not believable- no way an 8-year old (regardless of upbringing) could think with the complexity being ascribed to her. Still worth the read though - especially if you enjoy historical fiction.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship
The adult minor relationship is in the context of a culture where such things happened frequently. The author tries to avoid the worst aspects of such a relationship but the historical record requires that it exists. Can’t decide if this whitewashed version of a historical practice is good or bad though on the philosophical level
