Preposterous page-turner

If you can go with it and just enjoy all the coincidences and red herrings, this isn’t a bad read. The plot raced along, the bodies piled up, and I was satisfied.

I’m all for unreliable narrators but this particular storyteller was just exhausting. One too many characters and none of them could be trusted which normally makes for a great book but this was all over the place. The ending was a twist but not satisfying. I’d skip this one.

I liked it at first, but there were things that just didn’t make sense to me. Maybe there were details that I had missed, or maybe it was that they weren’t included. The ending was pretty ridiculous with too many forced twists and turns, and I think I had an awful look of annoyance on my face as I finished the last couple chapters.

Spellbinding

This story drew me in from the beginning. A thrilling story of grief, courage, and real life trauma that I couldn't stop thinking about. Well done!

Unfortunately, I was not surprised by the ending of the book. I was surprised The Girl Who Lived has such a high average rating. I did not find the story engaging, surprising, or remotely plausible. The protagonist, Faith Winters, is not likable and continually makes foolish decisions, making it nearly impossible to empathize. This made the story really difficult to finish because I just didn't care. As mystery/thrillers go, it's about as formula as you can get. I just wish I hadn't started it.

An entertaining story, to be sure- but the writing was nothing exceptional. I did enjoy the character of Faith and the turns that she took at the ending, from her descent into anxiety and depression to overcoming her demons.

This book was pretty terrible. Two stars because I managed to finish it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
