Really enjoyed the short story set up of the book
I love the shock that the “unnamed boy” and the murderers are Yao

This story is set in Japan. It stars a girl, Morino, and a boy who is sort of a friend to Morino. He is not named. They are classmates in the last year of high school. They are obsessed with serial killers and death. The boy tells part of the story in the first person. There are other narrators who tell their story in the first person. Morino is always shown through the eyes of others. The boy appears to be a psychopath. There are serial killers in the book. There is child and animal death. There is mutilation of people and animals. I found the book fascinating. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a very dark horror book that gets in the minds of some very disturbing individuals. If any of the issues I mentioned are a problem for you, you might want to pass on this book.

I think vignettes are similar to short stories for me: they are interesting in the moment but the connection doesn’t last long enough for me to want to come back to the book. These stories are beautifully and horrifically written. Definitely horror. But there just isn’t anything that makes me want to go back to the book when I know I’m starting a story from scratch.

This book was so fantastic. It was so creepy and disturbing. It included twists and turns I was not expecting. I seriously loved it.

Goth by Otsuichi is a collection of short stories featuring 2 high school students obsessed with the macabre and strange cases of violence. In each tale the unnamed narrator focuses on a new creepy story of death and murder. Ostuichi's use of the first- and third-person narratives is really interesting and very well done imo.

I learned it was adapted into a manga and film so I definitely want to check those out asap.

Quick warning - there is one story involving animal deaths (Dog) that is incredibly difficult but it still kept me super interested.

This was a little hard to read because the plot is creepy and bleak, but interesting. I like that in the Afterword he explains that this doesn't really reflect a lot of goth culture, though the main characters are goths. The plot twists in each story were interesting and I couldn't guess most of them, though the last story confused me a bit.

Enjoyable read but ultimately I am not that interested in reading about men that think they are different. Give me more Morino!
