Jack London is a master wordsmith. The story is a bit too dry for me; however, I appreciate the prospector's patience and scientific method approach to uncovering the final origin of the gold.

By all accounts this book should be pretty boring, but London is a master of his craft. I can't really think of an author who has a better grasp of natural imagery. I read this as an allegory for the disruptive and shortsighted practices of mankind in an otherwise peaceful and balanced world.
