This noir filled with anthropomorphic characters reminds me of Bryan Talbot's Detective Inspector LeBrock series. The drawing style is similar, with detailed and evocative artwork by Juanjo Guarnido. The story follows a hardboiled detective, feline private eye John Blacksad, as he navigates the political corruption and mystery of 1950s New York, juxtaposed with the trials of a struggling acting troupe. There are numerous metaphorical references to the race and economic inequalities of the time. The only real downside is that this is only the first part of the story, with Part 2 not yet published in English.

2024 Eisner Award finalist - Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior Art) (Juanjo Guarnido), Best Digital Comic
Although this is the second part of the story, it stands well enough on its own, although I'm sure it would be better to read the two volumes back to back. I get the sense in reading this that it has a large element of historical background as its inspiration. For example, I could see where New York power broker Robert Moses might be a basis for the book's central baddie, Lewis Solomon, whose architectural misdeeds ultimately cause the collapse of a bridge in a similar manner to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge disaster. At its heart, this book is a noir mystery with lots of shady characters and red herrings, not to mention some dark romantic subplots. The anthropomorphic character designs are interesting and well done, as is the detailed background work depicting a New York from decades ago. This book works as both a mystery and a period piece.

Ha pasado tanto tiempo sin nuevo material de Blacksad que ya había dado por concluida la saga. Pero este libro, siendo apenas la primera parte de dos espero sea el inicio de muchas nuevas historias, porque este personaje no decepciona.
