This is teenage YA but with a nice plot and nice characters, so overall despite some of the usual YA faults it makes for an enjoyable read.
The good thing? The mythical creatures are not out in the open, not in all the book. There are lots of secrets and mysteries being toyed about and around but it is not focused on the mermaids per se. This is refreshing for me and quite novel among its YA book peers.
You have this normal kid that is going through a self discovery phase after her grandma died, and starts realizing that her mom used to be a very different person that she is now after they both get summoned into an island to sort through granny's house and legacy.
And well, in this island, legend says that the mer kind live together with the humans, and a very mysterious book, that I kept cursing at her to read it whole once and for all since the first time she reads a tiny little part, goes hinting at how to recognize them.
So, she may or may not be descended from mermaids, her love interest may or may not be one, the hints are there, you can believe it not but you will not see a tail, well, maybe only a flash of one.

Miranda is a science-geek from New York thrust into the class-conscious high society summer vacation spot of Selkie Island.
She watches in suprise as her mother turns from a high-powered New York surgeon into a Southern lady. She finds out that she is the spitting image of her estranged grandmother.
And she meets Leo. Leo is a townie who shares her love of science and they feel an immediate connection.
I just read another book about a girl going through difficult times who meets a mysterious boy that I didn't enjoy. Sea Change gets it right. Here's a girl trying to recover from a bad boy experience and so she is suspicious and self-conscious and awkward.
While the speculative element in this one isn't really mysterious, it still was fun to discover the legends of Selkie Island along with the heroine.

Recently I've been indulging my inner hopeless romantic. It's sometimes nice to know that maybe I'm not so crazy after all, and the thing called 'true love' might just actually exist. Who knows?
I must say Friedman has captured my heart with this book. It is not often that a young-adult novel is able to capture the personality, the essence of a teenager so well. And watching Miranda grow was a thrill. As for Leo, what's not to love?
'Sea Change' was a refreshing novel; a breath of fresh air.

Wonderful Love it!!! I hope the author will make a sequel!!
I am fascinated with Irish tales of the selkie, creatures who are human on land, but transform into merpeople or seals.
Setting Sea Change on a barrier island off the American coast was a pleasant way to update the selkie story, but I found some of Friedman's other cultural updates off-putting. Constant mention of Fendi and Blackberry seemed out of place in what could have been a timeless romance story. Miranda, the protagonist, does not care about fashion. Why should we? I just found these references pointless.

I really enjoyed the book it had a mystery that pulled me in also the romance that was good to have in this book but I wish there was more with Leo and Miranda, I wish it was longer or had a sequel to it, but the one thing I didn't like about the book was the way Miranda was pushed into every thing and never really got a say. Leo was a dream in my opinion.
I really liked this book! Enjoeyed it very much! It's full of surprises and you just can't wait to see what happens next.
The mysteries in Sea Change are compelling, full of unexpected twists and turns. I love it when a book confounds my guesses, and I appreciated the somewhat open ending. Miranda is a fabulous, unique character with a penchant for science, vintage fashion, and swimming. Her love interest is adorable, but what really hooked me was the setting. Selkie Island is a character in its own right, full of Southern charm and seductive lore. I'm not a hugely visual reader, but I could absolutely picture Miranda's ancestral home and Fisherman's Village and Siren Beach. Recommend!
