An excellent zombie book that the faint of heart can mostly probably get through. The characters are great and it's a take on the zombiepocalypse that I haven't seen before.

Somewhere between 'it was ok' and 'liked it' for me. Actually it is really well written and I liked all the characters except the scientist, who killed it for me. I'm getting pretty tired of amoral, unethical scientists ruining things for everyone - it's such a boring trope in science fiction. Wouldn't it have been more interesting to see her internal struggle with the work she was doing? Wouldn't it have been more interesting to see her get into the dilemma of whether trying to find a cure was ultimately worth it? In the end it was a lot easier to make her out as either bumbling or dangerous, or both. Isn't there a responsibility to portray her as complexly as the other characters - both their flaws and virtues? You know, the way real scientists are... human.

Catchy and entertaining zombie novel that is not really a zombie novel. It is about a motley group of individuals forced off of their safe base in a world filled with "hungries" and "junkers". One of the crew just happens to be a hungry, but a precocious one with self control.
Very entertaining.
Very entertaining.

1.5 stars -- the extra half star only because it's a zombie apocalypse story.
Where to start?
1. The writing was atrocious. So inauthentic, so disingenuous. 2. The use of cliches and similes were awful. 3. The dialogue was terrible. 4. This is not a dystopian novel, despite some claims. 5. Dr. Cauldwell is apparently not a great, brilliant scientist, yet is also somehow contentious and elitist? 6. The tone feels like a YA novel, but then the author also uses profanity in an attempt to toughen up the language, but utterly fails 7. The plot is meh. 8. The characters are predictable. 9. Zombies are called hungries? Come on. 10. The title has nothing to do with the story. 11. No closure. 12. I just can't.
I know it looks like I'm being harsh in this review, but it's really not a good story. I'm very confused by all the 5 star reviews, but sometimes I think people rate things higher than they truly believe it's worth b/c they don't want to go against the grain.

I disliked Justineau for all the wrong reasons (too idealistic, too compassionate, too contrary, one of those types who blames themselves for something that ultimately isn't their intentional fault) but will stick to my guns till the bitter end: she's fucking annoying and I loathe her. Thought she was going to die, on account of some red-herring foreshadowing that went down in the beginning, but also think that the story's ending is quite fitting (and chilling). Found myself doing an 180ยบ as regards Melanie (found her obnoxious and unbearably albeit understandably naive initially, gained admiration and respect for her throughout the story). The development of Gallagher and Dr Caldwell's characters spun out only as expected, the cowardly youth and the manic scientist. The best for last: Sergeant Parks, forever and for always.

4.5 stars!! This book surprised me so much with how brilliant it was. I remember getting it as a gift a couple years ago, skimming through the pages, seeing that it was written in a childlike present tense (because it was Melanie's beginning part and its meant to be like that but I didn't know that at the time), and shelving it, thinking to myself "I'll probably never pick this up".......... God, I'm so glad I did.
Post-apocalyptic worlds are fascinating to me, but they're not usually my reading material of choice. The Girl With All The Gifts has everything though, and it blew my mind.
Phenomenal character development for the (pretty much) only central five characters. Incredible descriptions of the ghastly hungries and broken down environments. And fantastic, realistic dialogue!
10/10 would recommend!!
