I’m just not one of those people who connected with this or want to over think / over analyze this book, I swear some reviews feel longer than this book lmao
I felt so sorry for this little girl, I wish she could’ve stayed with the foster couple, but at least she has learned new things in life she will never forget and it will be useful for her to survive with her family.
Overall I liked this book , it was fine, and is 3 ⭐ for me, but I’ve realized with this that short literary fiction is not my thing and I’m okay with going through life without reading this kind of books.
Moderate: Grief
Minor: Child death and Pregnancy
I’m going to explain how the content warnings were present in the book (and some might be spoilers):
- Grief / Child death:
- Pregnancy: The little girl’s mom is pregnant, which is the reason why she was sent away in the first place.

The way that Keegan depicts the love and care that Mrs. Kinsella gives to our protagonist is so beautifully written, that it is a comfort to read her motherly affection, which also emanates to you as a reader. The voice that Keegan gives to her protagonist is also delicately written and she portrays the mind and behaviour of a young girl so well.
One thing that has really shown in this book was just how simplistic the plots, characters and writing can initially seem, but Keegan trusts that the reader finds the deeper meaning and emotions as they go through the book. I would recommend reading this book slowly. I usually read her books like you would experience a wine/whiskey tasting, reading slowly, holding the imagery and words in your mind to have a flavour for the different emotions, themes and interpretations, before digesting them and moving on to the next section of the book.
An utterly moving and exquisite novella.

Keegan effortlessly depicts the significance of a loving family, specifically during childhood, through the eyes of an unnamed girl. The simple writing style ensures it’s an fast read, but the emotional impact is found hidden between the lines. Books don’t often make me cry nowadays, but this one made me tear up.
Moderate: Racial slurs and Pregnancy
Minor: Child death and Physical abuse
The physical abuse is merely implied.
