I enjoy the very human characters, including the central female detective, flaws and all. The story moved well, although the intermittent insertion of backstory sometimes felt a little artificial. I am onto the next one already!

Despite jumping into the series in Book #2, Into the Night stands well on its own as a clever and complex police procedural set mostly at the top end of Melbourne. Having worked at 1 Spring Street, I loved the idea of a zombie movie set in the CBD. Bailey has an eye for detail and a sharp instinct for character. Gemma Woodstock is a bit of a mess post separation and moving to the big smoke and her partner Nick Fleet is abrasive and often unhelpful. Their story line as well as the main murder plot duck and weave all over the place, keeping you focused on the next development and the next clue. Just when you think you can see where its headed, you realise the murkiness and messiness of people has coloured their intent and behaviour, and while they may be dirty, mixed up with morally and ethically ambiguous challenges they're merely human.
Bailey's great prose and intricate plot are narrated well by Kate Hosking.
A great listen. I'll be chasing more from this author and narrator.

DS Gemma Woodstock is messed up. At times during this book I was wondering if she was going to make it to the end of of the story. I needed to see the glimer of hope at the end.

I originally started this book in January but got a few chapters in and could not get into it. I tried again 6 months later and pushed through the first half to discover that it definitely picked up.
This book is definitely a slow burn but ultimately it reaches a good last quarter.

I quite enjoyed the first Gemma Woodstock book, and this sequel was just kind of a bore after it. The dramatic situations Gemma was thrown into time and time again felt repetitive - what made them different from what she faced in The Dark Lake? That - combined with her personal spiraling and sheer stupidity when it came to her family - made Into the Night not that great.
Still giving it 2.5 stars though, because the thrill of the cases Gemma worked were really engaging.

Won as a goodreads giveaway. Thoroughly. Found it was not just another predictable procedural. Easy , enjoyable read. Would recommend.
