It was a very interesting and compelling story. It definitely helped that he focused on some of the main characters who had told their stories in books. I enjoyed it a lot.

“You miss his form, and the sound of his voice, for habit had made them almost necessary to you, and each of your senses feels the loss.”

“Empires preserve their power with the stories that they tell, but just as critical are the stories they don’t—the dark silences they impose, the pages they tear out.”

Found the last two chapters reflecting on empire and mutiny the most interesting. Points to the author for reminding the reader that the whole story exists in the context of British imperialism and reflecting on how narratives build power.

An interesting book on a very specific topic - like all his books, it's quite well done, though the topic didn't always appeal to me as much as some of his others. Still, it's pretty incredible (and horrifying) what these men went through, and something I'd truly never heard of before.

Really well done telling of the event from a wide variety of perspectives! I also loved the narrator’s voice!

Incredible read. I was gripped from the start to the finish. It helps when you’re writing a history book if you have a thrilling event to write about, but Grann really brought it to life. I particularly liked the emphasis he placed on the competing narratives of the events left by different survivors, and the care he took to highlight the role of the Kawesqar and Chona people in the story. Very extensively researched with thorough endnotes and a bibliography for further reading. A tour de force of history writing.
