I’ve been reading too much Afro-futurism to have enjoyed this as much as the others. I agree with another reviewer that this one feels a little meandering and even forced at times. I also found the way slavery was mentioned almost off-handed. Ick. And the classism in this one felt downright apologetic and defensive rather than just as literary indulgence. Also ick. Lastly, it all felt super white, heteronormative, gender binary, oh but I’m a feminist. But if your feminism isn’t intersectional then it’s not really feminist... disappointed.

Loved being back with the family

It’s lovely to learn more about some of other members of the de clairmont family and to see what’s happened since the last book.

2.5 stars. For a historical fiction novel about vampires and witches there wasn't enough magic, vampirism or history. The return of beloved characters was what made this at all enjoyable.
