I had several issues with this book: 1) It was Marcus’ origin story, but it was competing with his present-day romance/Phoebe’s story, as well as the continuity of Diana and Matthew’s new family. Too many things vying for my attention. Would’ve been better if it focused on just one of these. 2) Most stories revolving around war bore me. 3) While I got to know Marcus’ prior life better, I still feel like I don’t really know him. Nor do I feel any closer to liking or understanding Phoebe.
What I did like: how the twins are growing up and developing. They are so cute!!!
Hoping Blackbird Oracle is a better read.

It’s weird that the POV changes so often, and that most POVs are third person but one is first person. I liked learning about Marcus’s past, but some of the modern stuff was a slog.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Death, Racism, Murder, and War

Enjoyable addition to the All Souls books to flesh out the characters and their stories a bit more. I enjoyed the chapters alternating between past & present but sometimes the transitions from a contemporary chapter to a memory chapter felt a bit forced. Great to have more time with Matthew & Diana along with getting to know Marcus & Phobe better. Definitely not the best book out of the bunch but enjoyable for fans of All Souls trilogy craving new content.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Violence, Murder, and War
Minor: Racism
