i accidentally keep reading books that somehow involve death, grief and loss. i'm not upset about it though, it's comforting, in some way.
this was beautifully written but it was a little difficult to follow. probably my fault though, grieving takes a huge toll on the brain which makes it even harder to focus on reading.
i did search up some interpretations of this novella right after reading it, and it seems like it really is a "the reader has to put the pieces together" kind of story. which usually, i like. but maybe wasn't a good choice for me right now.
overall, i enjoyed the story/atmosphere and writing!

There is something a little weird about this book. I'm not really one for books written in very poetic language, where the language is almost the point of the writing. I like a good plot and characters I can identify with. This book, though short, only spoke to me sporadically; the rest of the time I felt I was being held at arms length.
I wonder, too, with books in translation, if too much is lost. Certainly in this case I struggle to believe the translator got the spirit of the work. When I read lines like "The weather was thick and blind again that day, and seemed to be saying boo!" I can't help but wonder if Elizabeth Rokkan was really trying, or if maybe she was trying to express something untranslatable.

This little-known book was fantastic. It's the story of a friendship forged between two 11-year-old girls, Unn and Siss. The strength of this bond is stronger than almost anyone can imagine, and is tested with the disappearance of Unn. Vesaas' writing is hauntingly beautiful; it was an enjoyable read.

i came in expecting simple yet pretty prose, but what i truly wound up admiring about this book is the author's ability to create believably irrational characters without quite slipping into the field of neurosis. it's a fine line to walk and i reckon he did it beautifully
