I don't read much YA, but this was a compelling story. The author weaves in a lot of folktales into the narrative which was unusual but delightful. I liked the magic elements and wish we could've learned a bit more about it. Loved the ghost dog too!

This was the perfect paranormal middle grade story. If you love V.E. Schwab's City of Ghosts series and doggies you will love this!

Elatsoe was sold to me as something different than it was, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a story of a magical Indigenous child who avenges her murdered cousin and takes down an absolutely diabolical white mans evil scheme. One notable thing I saw and loved in this story was the absolute trust Elle’s parents had in her ethics and opinions. It was so refreshing to see loving parents. Include some ghost pets, ace rep, and super interesting lore, and I am far from disappointed.
There are a few things I would change, primarily the drift from our main story into Elle‘s best friends life and family. It felt a little pointless and took me out of the main storyline. There was also not a solid explanation of the magic and creatures in this world - there are mentions of so many creatures and magical things and the story did veer off in some unexpected directions at times. It could have ended in a way that I feel would have been kind of cheaply and disappointing. Overall, I was happy with the ending.
