Charming. Family and ancestors. Friendship. Wholesome. Shennanigans. Mysterious. Spooky. Magic. Magical realism. Ghosts. History. Myths and legends. Storytelling.

Really fun use of magic, myth, and legend in a world that is quite like our own but full of the stuff of fairytales. Interspersed with old stories of Elatsoe's Six-Great grandmother and how she used her powers in the past. Wholesome family and friendship dynamics that will make you smile. Thoughtful notes on grief and different folks' reaction to it. Mystery van-Scooby Doo-type shennanigans, with a rich villain masquerading as a hero but spoiler:
the whole town is in on it. Perhaps a symbol for complicity with colonizer/white supremacy?
. Writing style and plot developments are both charming, sometimes corny, but overall endearing.

CW: some gruesome/violent scenes, not labored on but graphic.

Loved reading a book with an indigenous protagonist! The story itself was entertaining and the main characters felt like teenagers (i.e. making not-well-thought-through teenage decisions). The writing was a bit bland at times and some metaphors felt a bit too overt, but it didn't bother me too much.

I had no idea what to expect from this so I was pleased to find it was such an interesting, compelling adventure. I loved the world building, which was never over-explained but still felt very developed. It features lots of different fantasy elements including vampires, fae and ghosts and I loved learning about the magic. I found the characters endearing and I really liked following their journey to solve the mystery. There are several sad elements to the plot but it also has a gentle sense of humour throughout and I thought the blending of the tones worked well.
