Chirp Audiobook
CW: Animal abuse, suicide, eating disorders, sa
Foreward by Chuck Palahniuk, the stories are supposed to be transgressive fiction. Most stories were just average, but there were a few standouts.
First, I have to admit to not understanding the story, Lemmings. I have no idea who the narrator is & why his brother has so much power. I feel stupid. Also, the last story on the audiobook ends with loud music that drowns out the last sentence & I have a feeling that sentence is very important.
The story that elicited the strongest emotion from me was, Charlie. It was so horrible and I cried so much. The story of a little boy who was so jealous of his younger sister he did something unforgivable.
My favorite story started as a joke. I was reading, thinking, “what is this pretentious bullshit?” Then, I started to really like the story & came to the conclusion that I like pretentious bullshit & that’s that. I should reread The Secret History. What can I say, I like a little romance in my horror.
The shorts ran all over the place, I wouldn’t rate any of them badly, and I don’t regret reading any of them except maybe the one about the girl who had a story to tell. Many of these made you feel a little smarter from reading them, but only a couple will stay with me for a long time.

There was a line in the intro about how the worst thing the reader could do would be to instantly enjoy every word of the book. Nope, I think it's far worse to be completely bored and disinterested in all of the stories. For something that was supposed to be transgressive and provocative, this book failed mightily.
In many ways this fucking sucks. Incredibly trashy. The stories can be surprising, but they're surprising in a way that has you groaning and going "fucking hell, really?" Pure shock value.
On the other hand this was like crack cocaine when I read it at, like, 12 years old. (Which was probably the target audience.) Several of these images are probably still burned into the back of my mind somewhere. So it's memorable at least. Thanks, Chuck, wherever you are.

Very twisted. Definitely makes you stop and think about situations you normally wouldn't think about. Some stories definitely left a big of a scar.. just like it says.

It is not true that I read this collection of short stories, I thought it was a novel by C.P. instead he has only chosen the author and wrote the introduction, however interesting there were only a few pages, so I stopped at that moment waiting for "a real book" from one of my favorite author.

Since this book is comprised of short stories by different writers that Chuck Palahniuk chose himself, I was expecting a lot more out of this. Most of these stories, I did not care for at all. Some of the plots were creative, but I just didn't care. What makes it worse is that some of the stories seemed to just be written for the sake of being over-the-top disgusting. I'm a huge fan of Palahniuk, but I really felt like these writers were all trying to emulate his style - and they missed their mark. I read this quickly just to get it over with.
