This is one of the few "did not finish" books that I feel I can review. I tried to like this book, and there are some things going for it. I liked the world, I liked several of the secondary characters, I enjoyed the existential threat. I just couldn't stand the romance angle. An older, worldly man "accidentally" sweeps a simple, innocent, completely pure self-described "grass widow". I gave up when she accidentally touched his raging erection and he fell off the horse and she landed on top of him. I--I just couldn't.

A fantasy romance story about two people from different cultures come together. It is a very well written story about a farmer girl and patroller find unconventional love. There isn't much of an actual story, outside of their romance and finding acceptance. The fantasy world is basic, but is easy to understand and helps set up the tension of the romance. The writing and the characters are what make this book enjoyable. I don't usually enjoy books that focus on the romance, but I do plan on reading more of the Sharing Knife series.

I have been totally taken with this series and have actually finished the third and need to order the fourth. It is a little heavy on the romance(sex) for me, but I love the story. It has a strong female human character, who gets straight to the point. Her magical, mysterious, Lakewalker companion, who though missing his left hand is still a patroller, is trying to save the world. They have to deal with the prejudices of their two families and races, while surviving malices(magical creatures that suck the life out of everything and can turn creatures and humans into their minions).
