I have to say that it has been a long time since I've read a book through in one sitting. Truthfully though, this isn't a super long book.
I'm having a hard time describing what I loved about it. Malzieu weaves a strange tale like a Tim Burton/Roald Dahl/Shel Silverstein mash up with a hint of Neil Gaiman. Its written like a read-out-loud storybook, but it's for grown ups. There is a lot of sexual innuendo and adult themes, yet it's whimsical like something from childhood.
So I guess, I just have to say I loved it, and that's that. I don't think it would be for everyone, but if you normally like an unusual tale, this is an excellent book.

I highly recommend the audio- read by the reader of the Harry Potter books, he's great! I'm picturing Tim Burton, maybe Johnny depp... Very dark!

I watched the movie before I even knew there was a book and its one of my favorites. The movie is charming and heartwarming with a satisfying, albeit sad, ending.
I'm not sure what to think about this book. It basically carried the same plot as the movie until about halfway through and then the two go in different directions. The book is very French in that slice of life nothing happens kinda way.
Towards the end of the book, the characters start behaving in a way that is utterly mystifying. There is no good or logical reason for why they make the decisions and have the reactions that they do. Is this because we just needed some kind of turmoil at the end?
Do I just not get it?
I don't know, but I think I'll just watch the movie.

Bu kitabın ilk önce kapağı dikkatimi çekti, sonrasında da konusu. Çok ilginç değil mi ama? Kitabı defalarca gördüm, ancak elim gitmesine rağmen almadım, goodreadsta puanının düşük olmasının çok önemli bir payı var bunda. Neyse ki bu seneki DEX indiriminde, kaptım. Gene almayabilirdim ama zamanı geldi herhalde.
Mekanik Kalp, ufak bir kasabada dünyanın en soğuk gününde kalbi donan bir bebeğin hikayesini anlatıyor bize. Bir annenin sevgisini ve bencilliğini; aşkın her zaman can yaktığını...
Jack'in kalbi donduğunda, Madeleine, kasabanın doktoru, cadısı ve delisi, kalbinin çalışması için guguklu bir saat takıyor ve ona diyor ki;
Ancak Jack biraz büyüdüğünde Bayan Akasya'yı görüyor ve günden itibaren kalbi bir tek onun için atıyor. Onun kalbini kazanmak için yaptıkları ise azımsanacak türde değil.
Mekanik Kalp aslında oldukça sıkıcı başlayan bir kitap. Ancak Bayan Akasya işin içine girdiğinde öyle romantik ve dokunaklı bir hal alıyor ki size anlatamam, hikayenin sıkıcığı kendini hoş ve heyecanlı, biraz da yürek burkan bir seyirde ilerliyor. Modern bir Pinokyo hikâyesi okuyoruz, elbette biraz daha duygusal ve oldukça erotik. Erotik dediğim için eminim şaşırmışsınızdır. Ben de çok şaşırdım emin olun, öyle vıcık vıcık terli terli bir erotikliği yok. Dokunuşlar ve metaforlarla ifade edilmiş. Ve çok hoş.
Aile konusunu ise çok gerçekçi bir şekilde, abartarak işliyor. Peki nasıl oluyor bu? Oğlunu seven ve kalbinin kırılmasını istemeyen bir anne düşünün, sonrasında ise bir çılğınlık ve fantastik güçlerle neler yapabileceğini. İşte böyle bir ortamda Jack doğuyor. Madeleine aslında sizin anneniz, bunu unutmamak gerek.
Bu kitabın mutlu sonla bitmesini gerçekten çok istedim ancak hasbelkader bu mümkün olmadı. Yani kitabın sonunda kalbiniz kırılacak. Gene de okuyun ama, pişman olmazsınız. Üstelik şu aralar D&R indiriminde 5 lira gibi cüzi bir miktara alabilirsiniz. Ve üstüne üstük bir de filmi çekilmiş. Film diyorum ama aşağıdaki trailerdan da gördüğünüz üzere bir animasyon, kitaptan çok daha eğlenceli bir hali var. Vakit bulunca izleyeceğim. Kalbim tekrar kırılacağını bile bile!

This book reminds me of a children’s book. I thought it was a children’s book when I first bought it. The cover, the shortness, the size of the type, the title, everything appealed to the child in me.
Until I started reading.
This is definitely not a children’s book and I feel very much that it is aimed at children and children will be enchanted by the cover and the title.
The children’s books that I remember do not reference landing strips and cunnilingus. And a whole section that I can’t even begin to form into words, involving a girl’s tongue and clock hands.
I read this in almost one sitting, as it’s only 166 pages. And I finished it with a peculiar feeling that I could not begin to understand what I’d just read. It was certainly not what I was expecting. The distinct adult nature of some sections of what I considered a children’s book. The sometimes strange, almost poetic description.
I also think that something was lost in the translation. There was no connection there, when I think there should have been, had I been reading it in the original language it was written. It’s a very odd little book, and I can’t quite put my finger on how I feel about it.
Would I recommend this? Yes. I have already recommended it to my dad, and I would definitely recommend picking it up, if it’s for quite cheap. I wouldn’t recommend paying full price for it, as you will definitely end up disappointed. Buy it used.
I think some people will interpret this book in different ways and for me, that is a good thing. Each person reading will take something different away from it. For me, it made me think about my first love and heartbreak (albeit unrelated). For others, they may read something entirely different.
The reason I am not giving it a higher rating, is because I am not sure my feelings upon finishing it. I’m seeing a lot of high ratings, so obviously those people read something or took away something different from this to me.
But at the same time, I would recommend it. A very strange, weird, little book.
