The loop é uma história de zombie adjacente. Em uma cidade pequena dos EUA, uma rápida transformação está acontecendo entre os jovens. Uma companhia de biotecnologia local criou um protótipo para melhorias humanas e resolveu testar em alguns jovens. Isso rapidamente saiu de controle já que o organismo criado causa seus hospedeiros ansiar por violência como uma droga, para piorar a criatura se desenvolve o suficiente para reproduzir sozinho buscando novos hospedeiros. Assim a narrativa é uma corrida contra o tempo para evitar que essa criatura se espalhe para além das fronteiras da cidade. O livro acompanha a protagonista Lucy, uma garota adotada do Peru, seu melhor amigo Bucket que pertence à única família paquistanesa da cidade, ambos têm dificuldade de se misturar com seus colegas de classe brancos e socialmente divididos; e Brewer colega branco e adepto de drogas recreacionais, que se torna interesse romântico de Lucy, o sentimento crescente entre os dois sendo um dos fatores humanizantes do livro. Os três juntos a outros personagens que aparecem e são mortos tentam buscar uma solução para salvar a cidade ou destruí-la antes que a epidemia avance. Os personagens não são particularmente carismáticos e Lucy não é uma protagonista agradável. Ela é crítica a todos e constrói uma barreira entre ela e seus pais adotivos que são retratados como pais excelentes. O desenvolvimento de seus sentimentos por Brewer suaviza um pouco a personagem, mas “too little, too late”, ainda achei difícil simpatizar com ela. Lucy descobre que tem tendências violentas ao se adaptar melhor a situação do que seus amigos. Ao encontrarem um cientista parte da equipe responsável pelo organismo criado o grupo descobre que não há salvação e a única forma de salvar o mundo é causar o genocídio da cidade por parte do exército. O livro tem passo rápido e é cheio de violência e gore, todo o tempo a situação parece perdida e o final é dark e sinistro com Lucy e Brewer, os últimos sobreviventes conseguindo finalmente causar o exército bombardear a cidade e morrendo no processo. Um final sombrio porém, para mim, um bom final pois não li muitos livros em que a solução é a destruição do elenco completo de personagens. Suponho que pode ser considerado um final feliz já que tecnicamente a epidemia foi contida. A história foi interessante, apesar que, nas conversas finais, os personagens tiveram saltos enormes a conclusões sem dados reais que comprovassem as possibilidades discutidas, como a possibilidade do organismo dominar o mundo ou talvez o universo. Isso foi um ponto fraco. Os personagens não serem agradáveis e as conotações bizarramente sexuais na escrita de algumas cenas foram outros pontos fracos. No entanto o enredo e o final foram bons o suficiente. Dou 3.25 estrelas.                                                                                                                           

I skipped a bunch throughout the book, I couldn’t make it to the end.  Too gross, way too much description 

A lot of body-horror, beware. 

This is a very good book the first 3 or 4 chapters are not the rest of the book and can be very off-putting but the latter half is good for any dystopian or horror fan.

 2.5 stars I think. I just felt so emotionally distant from this the whole time.

This should be a plot line I would love. It deals with the excesses of a tech corporation that reminded me of Bad Blood in an interesting way. However, I just could not get into the plot of this and I just didn't really feel for the characters. There is a mixed media element to this (sort of; there's only three instances of it) and I really wanted more of that. When they do show up, they feel like a sort of out-of-voice way of info-dumping what was happening. I don't think this is a terrible way of making sure readers are up to speed but I just wanted more of them so it would feel more integrated into the plot rather than just showing up with important plot info and then disappearing. 

I thought that Lucy as a character was interesting but ultimately I never felt connected to her plight. The action of this book kicks off very quickly. When I'm reading horror, I want a bit of time to get to know the characters and feel tension start to build before the bad guy is revealed. Not every horror has to be like that but it's what I prefer and I didn't get any of that here. Because of that, I didn't feel anything when the characters were in danger, which really diminished the horror for me. This book falls more on the body horror side of things but even that wasn't that frightening to me and I usually hate reading about gore. I just wanted a greater scare factor from this. 

Ultimately, I think this is fine. The writing is fine and the plot is fine. I just didn't connect with it, which left me a bit bored while reading.
