I made it 1:24 hours into it. That’s it. Maybe it was the narrator, maybe it’s the story. But it didn’t hold my attention. I feel like it could’ve been really witty and funny, but wasn’t.

As entertaining as the previous books in this series.

A bit of a wild and crazy romp with Kansas City's Country Club set (I'm getting a Mission Hills County Club vibe.) full of multiple murder attempts on the main character, eccentric friends and family, and a hot detective. I found this book to be fun, if a bit outlandish.

I'll be looking forward to more of Ellison and company.

This is book 3 in a series.

funny hopeful mysterious tense medium-paced

I just love the County Club Murders series from Julie Mulhern. It is set in 1970s Kansas City, a very under-represented era and setting in historical mysteries. I was thrilled when I was lucky enough to read an advance copy. This is my favorite mystery series currently being published, and #3 in the series did not let me down. Chapter 2 is hilarious, a complete gift from the author, and a perfect introduction to the ridiculous events that Ellison will have to face throughout the book.

Ellison Russell is smart, capable and usually able to deal gracefully with the most awkward situations. Unfortunately for her, she has plenty of practice dealing with awkward situations, often involving murder. In this third installment, she is being directly targeted by an unknown person, for unknown reasons. No one can imagine why anyone would wish her dead, although of course her mother is convinced that she did something to incur a murderer's wrath.

We are also introduced to Ellison's sister Marjorie, and her Aunt Sis. Family dynamics frustrate and confuse the situation. Anarchy Jones is present to try to protect Ellison from harm, and Hunter Tafft is present trying to woo her.

Overall, Clouds in My Coffee is funny, witty, entertaining and moving, with a satisfying mystery. It definitely left me impatient for the fourth in the series!

This is the third book in this series that I've read and I'm really quite enjoying them - I like the retro 70s setting and I really like the cranky antagonistic family dynamics. I'll be watching out for more.

This one was so good! I'm glad I caved and continued on with the series.

The Walfords are one chaotic family. It's a good thing chaos makes for great story.

My only problem with this book was that it didn't have enough Hunter Tafft. I hope to see more of him in the next book.

All in all, it's a great read and I'm enjoying this series a lot.

4.5 stars

This is the third installment in the Country Club Murder series set in 1974 Kansas City, Missouri.

The protagonist, Ellison Russell, widowed and “on the cusp of 40”, is smart and funny; and the electricity between her and Homicide Detective Anarchy Jones could run the lights in my house for a year.

The best book in the series so far. Family secrets, mothers & daughters, and most of all sisterhood. The author delves in to the complex love/hate relationships that make up Ellison's family.
