I don't have much to say on this one. It was a good story and I enjoyed the audio book. It's not quite a 4, however. Maybe it's the ending, which felt a bit unsatisfying, or maybe certain parts felt too drug out with too many bad things happening one after another - I'm not sure. Overall a good read, though. I enjoyed listening to it, it was pretty fast paced, and I was rooting for Jesse the whole time!
Though I have a question for those who have read it - Was Hatchet like this?? I was one of the few students who did not read Hatchet in elementary school and I'm just curious as there was a Hatchet reference and both books appear alike on a surface level.

Graphic: Animal death, Violence, and Death of parent
Moderate: Grief and Car accident

I came to this book from a LibraryAware YA recommendation list of titles like Yellowjacket. While there are no sports team or cannibalism, this did have a survival scenario that viewers might enjoy.
I liked this and would read this author again- in fact the books that came out after this one look like they get better and better.
This is the female version of Hatchet. And the survival stakes feel very believable. And, if not for the ending, I would have rated this one start higher. (No spoilers sweetie ;) ) I found the main characters shift in goals compelling, and the narrator deserves a ton of credit. I’m looking forward to following this narrator across Marshall’s other books.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but then it was pretty fast-paced and exciting! All about a young girl who goes to live with her dad in the woods and has to fight for survival after he dies! Once the plot got exciting, I couldn’t wait to see how it ended!!! 🐺 🐕 🔪 🌲 👧 ✈️ 🔥

Well, this was intense. I appreciated seeing a female protagonist in a survival setting. Jess as a character is fairly likable, and her progression throughout her time stuck in the woods is believable. This book was good, but overall didn't leave a super strong impression on me. From start to finish, there is just a string of horrible events, one after the other. Towards the end, every day stuck in the woods with Jess starts to feel the same. Which makes sense, but doesn't necessarily make for a good read.
Can this book be taught in the classroom? Overall, yes.
content warnings: intense action sequences, shootings, life and death suspense, physical and emotional trauma.

Listen. I know--I KNOW--that Bo was a wild dog and wouldn't have been able to live and be happy in civilization. BUT that doesn't mean I'm not devastated that he didn't survive. That scene of the ghost Jess and Bo disappearing into the wild together *sobs*.
This story just solidifies for me that if I were put into this situation I would die immediately, no doubt.
Very good book!
