This book was unsettling and uncomfortable to read. McCarthy has created a complex and despicable character, that could be any person you walk past on the street, and that thought is terrifying!

While I appreciate the humour in the book, the writing style was not for me. It sometimes made it difficult to read, and I found myself having to read some parts again to make sense of it. I also would’ve liked to feel a bit more suspense with the events in the story.

Overall, I did not enjoy reading this, but only because the content is so unnerving (well done to the author)! Worth a read if you’re looking for a quick, dark read that will leave you with an anxious belly.

A beautifully written horrible tale. Thank goodness it was short. I would have DNF’d it but I reached the end of the audiobook while I was deciding. It’s certainly atmospheric but I don’t know that this story needed telling

It reads more like a poorly written true crime video. The characters aside from the main character are one dimensional, the writer attempts to add depth to why the MC does what he does and leans into
mental illness
but it's definitely not thought out. Overall its just a badly written attempt at horror. It's more shock value, based on different actual serial killers than the writer being creative. The lack of grammar also wanted to stop me from reading, although I hope it was just a miss print on my end.

I won't call this a hopeful book by a long shot, but maybe you should read it if you think people are more evil nowadays than they have been in the past. Child of God is a gritty piece of literature and is a bit painful to read at times (especially since I grew up partly in East Tennessee and can picture these characters in living shoes), but there are some real nuggets of truth buried in the grime.

Also THIS BOOK IS HELLA TRIGGERING for me since I grew up in an environment similar to the place depicted in Child of God. Read with caution wrt sexual abuse, physical abuse, incestuous rape, murder, desecration of corpses, child abuse, animal cruelty.
